Testimonials
“I joined Torbay table tennis club at the age of 12. I was lucky enough to be introduced into the club by very welcoming coaches and club members. This enabled me to feel comfortable and grow as a player. 6 years on, this continued support has meant I am constantly improving, which is something I hope I can continue in future alongside hard work and determination.”
Torbay Table Tennis Academy
Kris and Jo Piwowar started the academy in 2011 in a small community hall in Torquay, with a Saturday session and access to only five tables.
They quickly attracted some serious players and many juniors who wanted coaching and development, which meant that they quickly outgrew the premises.
Torbay Table Tennis Academy moved to the progressive Torquay Academy in 2013, with eighteen tables available. They have created a centre of excellence for table tennis in South Devon.
The Academy were awarded the Table Tennis England ‘Club of the Year’ Award in 2017 and is now one of the biggest clubs in England.
Meet Jo and Kris
It’s a family affair at the Academy with the Piwowar’s – Kris, Jo, Jakub and Kacper are a family with a shared love of Table Tennis. They are based in Devon, and they run, coach and play at the Torbay Table Tennis Academy.
Kris Piwowar
Kris is the lead coach and Chairman of Torbay Table Tennis Academy. He played in the first league in Poland and was a National medalist in the youth categories.
He became a coach whilst studying at university and has now been coaching for over 20 years. He also now works as a coach at the Talent Development Centre in Plymouth and shares his knowledge with local colleges.
Kris’ favourite coaching exercises are irregular game exercises, because of the uncertainty of the opponent’s style and tactics. He enjoys improving the technical skills of a players’ game most about coaching.
“Every player should have the capability to adjust their game.”
Jo Piwowar
Jo is married to Kris and is a lead coach and Secretary at the Academy. She played in the first women’s league in Poland whilst completing her university degree.
Like Kris, she became a coach whilst studying at university and also been coaching for over 20 years. She also now develops table tennis at Torquay Academy and works with the University of Exeter.
Jo’s favourite coaching exercise is multi-ball training because both player and coach must give 100% commitment and focus. She likes to see how the players develop their skills from the moment they join the club.
“Seeing the progress in every player, no matter what level they started at, is very satisfying and shows us that we are doing the job right!.”
